FAQs

Q: What happens after I submit my answers?

A: You will receive an email confirming your entry into the Game 1 drawing. You will be notified by email if you have won. You will also be entered into the end-of-year Grand Prize drawing.

Q: When will the winners be announced?

A: The grand prize winners of the Garmin G3 Approach GPS devices will be announced on Dec 30th, 2011. Additional winners will be announced throughout 2011. QR Code T-shirts will also be awarded to a select number of participants.

Q: Do I need a GPS Device or Smart Phone to enter the Game 1?

A: No. Game 1 is an online game contained within the Hickok Cole web site. But if you would like to use your device, we have provided you with GPS coordinates that will help you solve the puzzles.

Q: What is the origin of the phrase “location. location. location”?

A: William T. Dillard, the founder of Dillards Department stores coined the phrase. One of the cornerstones of Dillard’s business philosophy was that location is the key to success.

Q: What is GPS and how is it used?

A: The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a means to find any location on the surface of the earth by intersecting lines of longitude and latitude. GPS uses multiple satellite signals to calculate a precise location. Up until very recently the U.S. Government restricted the pin point accuracy for this process. In early 2000 the full technology of GPS became available for use by the average citizen. Today, most Smart Phones have GPS capability and we use this technology for navigation and traffic monitoring all of the time. At some point geocachers left the world of only using paper maps and a compass to use the more accurate, faster, and easier to carry mini computers that have GPS capability.

Q: How has barcode technology evolved into QR Codes?

A: Years ago the retail world began using bar code scanners which really have become ubiquitous. Most recently the common barcode also known as a UPC Code has evolved into another technological innovation, the QR Code. By scanning a QR Code you can now capture vast amounts of data that can include GPS coordinates and almost instantly locate within about 10 feet the part of a puzzle, a logbook, a cache, or a geobug that you seek.

Q: What is Latitude?

A: Latitude is the numbers that defines a location with regards to its distance north and south of the Equator which is the horizontal line that divides the planet and runs through Ecuador in South America.

Q: What is Longitude?

A: Longitude is the numbers that defines a location with regards to its distance east and west of the Prime Meridian which is the vertical line that divides the planet and runs through Greenwich, England.
