Highgate at the Mile

Highgate at the Mile reimagines a commercial office site just outside of Tyson’s Corner as a lush suburban oasis. The first of several additional residential buildings being constructed in the community, this 365-unit residence adds luxury to an all-American aesthetic, influenced by rugged West Coast vibes to promote a sophisticated, yet approachable lifestyle to residents.

Designers approached the space from a holistic perspective, looking for ways to incorporate elements of nature and implement indoor/outdoor experiences where possible. The team collaborated with the project architects to extend the wooden window panels of the facade into the lobby space by creating bay window seating nooks.

The lobby’s cool color palette balances the addition of warmer finishes and the variety in textures including cowhide and leather to channel the chic, yet rugged West Coast design concept while feeling airy and light. Hidden design elements–like sculptural designs on the ceiling that create a floral pattern of shadows against the wall below to activate the entire space and engage guests and residents in the lobby.

Designed with families and gatherings in mind, the residence features expansive entertaining spaces and two kitchen and dining areas with delicate penny tile backsplashes and granite countertops. Commissioned live edge dining tables, an 8′ copper hearth, a fire pit, and the addition of curated artwork provide an elevated touch of home.

Highgate’s emphasis on community and the natural lifestyle of the west coast influence the selection of amenities including a 250,000-SF fitness facility, an outdoor patio connecting to the lobby, and a second floor club room with shuffleboards, a media room, and access to an outdoor terrace.
